Sam Winston

Sam Winston is an artist primarily known for his typographic artworks and books. He has exhibited and created projects for museums worldwide, with his work held in the permanent collections of Tate Britain, the British Library, the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., and the J. Paul Getty Museum. His first mass-market book, a collaboration with Oliver Jeffers, won the Bologna Ragazzi Award for fiction, debuted at number five on the New York Times Bestseller List, and has been translated into 24 languages.

Sam also maintains a twenty-year contemplative practice. He regularly spent time on retreat within several traditions, including Vajrayāna/Dzogchen (under Chökyi Nyima Rinpoche), Insight Meditation (with Martin Aylward), and the Zen Peacemakers (with Bernie Glassman). This communal practice runs alongside his own solitary retreat work, most notably dark retreats that entail prolonged periods of sensory reduction.
